JAMES CHAPTER 5

1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. 3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. 4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. 5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. 6 Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you. Patience in suffering 7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. 8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. 9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. 10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. 11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. 12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. Faithful prayer 13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. 17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. Restore wandering believers 19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; 20 let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

Lesson No. 662 "The Effectual Fervent Prayer of a Righteous Man...."

Book of James, Chapter 5 03/19/2023

1) Chapter 5 starts with a condemnation of powerful men that have exploited the poor. Verse 1 says their miseries are to come; what are they?

2) What happens to their riches, garments, and money? (Hint- verses 2/3).

Verse 4 tells what they did to the poor; who has heard their cries?

3) Verses 4, 5, and 6 remind us of a parable the Lord told us; what is it? (Hint- Luke Chapter 16: 19-31)Are we really talking about money?

4) What is the promise to the faithful, and what is needed until we see Him? (Hint- 7 and 8) Who is standing at the door? (Hint- verse 9)

5) James then jumps to the prophets and an example of patients until the 'Judge' returns in verses 10 and 11; he says that the prophets although they suffered they were happy, why?Did James just share prophesy?

6) Verse 12 warns against swearing an oath (why?) and then tells us to make our yes a yes and our no a no, why? Why is this important for a Christian?

7) What does verse 13 tell us to do when we are afflicted?

8) Verses 14 and 15 tell us to do something most Christians and church elders don't do, why do you suppose that is? Do they...we...have no faith in the elders, or God, or how to handle the situation if the Lord does not heal?

9) Notice that in verse 15, the healing is a 'given' but then the focus turns to our sin, why? Remember, things are either of faith or of sin!

10) Verse 16 again talks of healing but as related to faults! What does this mean? What does passionate, earnest prayer from a righteous person do?

11) Effective, fervent prayer example is given in verses 17 and 18.

12) Verses 19 and 20 given instruction as to how to help one another, what is it?So, has James helped us to become those people God made us to be?
