HOSEA CHAPTER 11

God’s fatherly love

1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. 2 As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images. 3 I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them. 4 I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them. 5 He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return. 6 And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels. 7 And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him. 8 How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together. 9 I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city. 10 They shall walk after the Lord: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west. 11 They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the Lord. 12 Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.

Chapter 11

1) God speaks to us in Chapter 11- what does He sound like in verse 1? How does that make you feel?

2) Verse 2 describes what the chosen people of God did that was deserving of God's wrath- what was it?

3) God talks about leading, teaching, caring for Ephraim even taking them by the arm in verses 3 and 4- just like a parent teaching a child to walk! Do you see how this is like the task of making disciples?

4) Verses 6 and 7 describe what God must do. Take this thought to America today- what must God do to us along with the world? How much if any 'exalting God' goes on today?

5) See the heart of God in verse 8 over this! What do you think? Is this like a parent having to discipline a child who is behaving badly but it hurts the parent more than the kid? Both northern and southern kingdoms are to be punished.

6) Verse 9 is interesting; God is God and He, unlike man, will not destroy his people (completely), although they deserve it. We call this mercy. But if a God were a man, he would.

7) Verses 10 and 11 foretell what the people will do. They also describe 'reverent fear'. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? How do you see God?

8) The chapter closes with the kingdoms bringing God lies and deceit. God sees and knows all things and like other words from God to Hosea, He sees some hope in the hearts of men from Judah. God is always looking for the righteous.

9) Note that God no longer talks about Hosea and Gomer. Wonder why, and what did happen to their marriage of 'service' to God. What do you think? Did she stay with Hosea and love him only?
