FIRST JOHN CHAPTER 1

Jesus Christ is God’s Son
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2 (for the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 3 that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
Living in the light of God
5  This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

FIRST JOHN CHAPTER 2

1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Lesson No. 139                             "Sound Familiar? "

Book of First John, Chapter 1, Chapter 2: 1-6                   03/03/2013

1)      What does verses 1 and 2 remind you of? (Hint- John 1: 1, 2, 14)

2)      Verse 3 brings something to light that speaks to abundant life in Christ- He gives us fellowship with Him and the Father through Jesus.  This is a direct result of Jesus' prayer in John17: 20, 21).

3)      Why does John, in verse 4, speak of joy being full?  How does this to happen?

4)      John uses the analogy of light and darkness to describe Christ and life in Christ.  Verses 5 declares that God is light, and darkness is sin.  What does verse 6 mean?

5)      What is the benefit of walking in the light of Christ?  Can we truly have fellowship and the forgiveness of sin if we are in darkness?

6)      Verse 8 is pretty real- what is John saying about us and sin?  Is this in contrast to verse 7?  Do we deceive ourselves and breaking fellowship with God?

7)      So what does John say we should do if we realize that we have sinned?  (Hint- verse 9)

8)      Verse 10 is a bit confusing.  Why does he say that we make Jesus a liar if we deny that we have sinned?

9)      We can't stop with Chapter 1- what is the remedy John gives us with regard to sinning?  (Hint- Chapter 2: verses 1and 2)

10)  How does John say that we 'know' Christ?  (Hint- verse 3)

11)  John asks us to test whether or not we really do love Jesus in verses 4 and 5.  What is it?  What is Jesus' commandment? (Hint- John 15: 12)

12)  How does John say we should live our lives?  Who is our role model?  (hint- verse 6)

13)  John in his letter, seems to be putting us to the test- who are we that claim to love Jesus and how should we live?
